Hooker’s Cards and Collectibles

This is my second post on the world tour of brick and mortar card shops.  I stopped in Eugene, Oregon at Hooker’s Cards and Collectibles.  I had a nice talk about football with Dennis the store’s owner.  We talked about whether the Bills could put it together this season, even though he’s a Cowboys fan (Booooooo!), and about Panini taking over as the exclusive NFL card maker.

This place was a bit unique.  There were boxes of cards and comics packed from floor to ceiling.  Display cases so covered you couldn’t even see into them.  He seemed to know where everything was although I’m not sure how.  The mass of cards was quite impressive.  Dennis told me he’d been at his current locations since 2000 and in business for nearly 30 years.  He said he’s got a very loyal customer base and that business is really good.  He was a good guy to talk to and seem to be interested in helping me out.  Unfortunately he had no Jim Kelly cards other than some old base cards.

Because I don’t want to see all the physical shops disappear I always give them a little bit of my business. I bought 4 hobby packs of 2015 Contenders basically just because they weren’t that expensive and he had a bunch.  And 4 hobby packs of Topps Platinum because I like those cards and can help out a friend collecting that set.

Couple of inserts from 2015 Contenders

And nothing much to add from the 2015 Platinum either, I didn’t get any of the Gold cards that I needed but I did get a couple of parallels (both that I already owned, how unlucky).  An Alvin Dupree Sapphire Refractor and here’s the Sammie Coates X-Fractor.

If you get a chance to visit Eugene, Oregon grab a beer at one of their many fine micro-breweries and stop by and say hello to Dennis at Hooker’s Cards and Collectibles.  And open a pack or two!

Jim Kelly – 2015 Donruss Years in the League

So I picked up a couple of these on eBay a while back.  The first one (Numbered 5 of 11) was a huge find at $9.99 plus $2.54 shipping.  It’s a great price as far as I’m concerned.  A low numbered Jim Kelly card for 13 bucks, is a deal I’ll do any day.   The second one (Numbered 1 of 11) was a bit more expensive at $17.50 plus $3 for shipping so I got two low serial numbered inserts for about $34.  I also saw another one up for $49.99 or best offer but when I went to put in an offer it was gone.  So I’ll probably won’t be getting that one.

The ultimate goal for me would be to have every single card of a serial numbered set for Jim Kelly.  I thought this would be a nice one to try but it’s probably a little unrealistic.  If anyone sees one out there let me know.

10 years of Trade Cards Now

When I got back into collecting last summer I searched for some sites and communities to reintroduce myself to the hobby.  Trade Cards Now is a trading site that I’ve been frequenting for about 10 months.  5 days ago the website turned 10 years old.  That’s quite an accomplishment for a trading card website in a time where the trading card industry has change a whole lot.  I got lucky as these guys have welcomed me and my Buffalo Bills fandom right in.  So I wanted to give them a shout out.  Go visit them at TradeCardsNowBoards.com

The guys over there are great guys.  They regularly hold contests ranging from weekly pick ‘ems in football season to my favorite, guess the serial number of the serial numbered card.  Great contests and great sports and card chatter.  I’ve only recently began trading with a few of them but they have always gone above and beyond to make me feel like a valued member of their community and even added in an extra card or 2 when I win a contest or make a trade.

I’d like to mention the moderators TCN-admin, bakemeister52 and Spickate, those guys rock.

Go check them out and if you do tell them I sent you, they are running a promotion right now that gets me some TCN Cash if I get some new active members to sign up.

Check them out!

The Fairfield $7.99 Pack Break – 5/15/2016

When I was at my local Target I picked up a Fairfield Company Repack box. It only cost $7.99 and comes with 4 random packs (2013 Prizm is shown through the packaging) and 50 cards. It promises no hits.

It came with the following 4 retail packs.
2014 Panini Contenders, 2014 Score, 2013 Score, 2013 Panini Prizm
4packs

Not a lot to report. Not that I was expecting a lot. I especially like the William Perry Wild Card. Here is a good example of the variety of cards in the 50 card box.
9CardsFrom50

And here are the 2 Buffalo Bills cards that I pulled. A Topps rookie of Marcus Easley and an Upper Deck Lee Evans.
2BillsCards

And a nice Cam Newton Topps Rookie.

After opening the packs there was nothing huge to report.
Just a couple of inserts.

So overall no big hit and nothing to help complete a set but it was fun seeing some of the old cards and opening up some packs from the past few years. For 8 bucks it was totally worth the fun. Time to open up one more pack!

All My Cards: Part 1

When it comes down to it, I’m a stats geek.  I used to be a database specialist.  I like numbers, I like to keep track of things.  I’m a little weird.  One of the things I’m trying to do is catalog my entire card collection.  Some of it will be easy to catalog as it’s pretty well organized into boxes by year and card company but some of the singles that I’ve purchased online or in random re-packs are going to take a long time.

I’m working on a spreadsheet for every set I own.  More specifically I’m working on a spreadsheet for every set that I own at least one of the cards in that set.   I know that sounds crazy but it helps me count and keep track of all the cards.   It will also allow me to import all of my cards into online databases such as Zistle (https://www.zistle.com/GimmeSomeJimmy/).    It will allow me to print out customs checklist of either cards I need or cards I have for trade.  My problem is coming up with the best way to do this. I’m open to suggestions.

I’m currently using a pencil and paper to keep track of the cards as I go through checklists.  Then I do the data entry into my excel spreadsheets.  Once I get a set completely input into the spreadsheet any new card is easily added but getting everything up to date is not easy.  It’s very time consuming, but I’ll get there.  Here’s my first update.  I’ve only got eight sets completely into spreadsheets.  And that doesn’t include the few I have the most of, like 1990 Pro Set or 2012 Score.  Cheap boxes mean tons of cards.  It also doesn’t include Upper Deck E-pack or some of the inserts and hits!  But this is the start.  If I work on it a little by little over time I’ll get it completely finished.  My Goal is to be done this summer and start the 2016 Football season off right! When I’m done I’ll post the entire list.

Cleve’s Baseball Cards and Collectibles

I’m lucky enough to travel around these great United States of America and get a chance to see different places and meet different people.  From time to time I stop in on the local card shop (LCS) and check out how things are going in the “brick and mortar” world.

Recently I was able to stop into to Cleve’s Baseball Cards and Collectibles in Springdale, Arkansas.  This place has been around since 1979 and is one of the last remaining card shops in Arkansas.  It’s run by Gary who I chatted with for a little while.  He even searched the private stash in the back for anything Jim Kelly related.  No luck.

One of their main features is a Tuesday night auction.  They will auction off any card for you.  I looked through probably 30 cards with auction forms sitting on a long glass case.  You just put your card up for auction and throughout the week people come and put in their bids.  It was a pretty cool set up and from the looks of it they have a large and loyal following.

They didn’t seem to be short on business.  In fact while I was in the shop looking through their selection, there were two gentlemen buying and selling some cards and other memorabilia.  And as I was leaving a young women came in with an old baseball set in a binder to get some help pricing and possibly selling.

While their selection wasn’t huge (It’s a small place) it was diverse.  Being in Arkansas it was filled with former Razorbacks and pretty much anything currently related to the Cowboys. But it had a nice mix of baseball, football, basketball, and hockey.

I didn’t find anything to add to the Jim Kelly collection but I like to give them a little business.  I bought 4 packs of 2016 Panini Contenders Draft Picks.  I got 6 cards I need in that set but no autograph or big hit.  I grabbed a couple for the personal collection too.  Just for fun I picked up a few Buffalo Bills from a box labeled $1.

Awesome box, finally completed the set. One pack even had 4 of the cards I need to complete the set. That’s a big win. Is there really a better feeling than finishing a set? I can’t even really describe it but it’s a nice sense of accomplishment. Now it’s time for some trades. And time for a new set to start working on.
